That's such a fun answer I hate to come in with a more serious one. But just in case there are some who are really curious about it and want a serious answer, here's mine. Is it possible to get a bus to jump? Yes - they actually did it for the filming. Is it possible to get a bus to jump as far as it would have had to in order to get across the gap shown in the movie? Without having done the math I'm still pretty sure the answer is no, at least not without adding rocket propulsion or something like that. Would it be possible to jump a gap like that in a freeway bridge with any kind of normal motor vehicle, like maybe an F1 race car? Not unless the bridge was designed by a mad man. If you could jump the gap, you could also go airborne even with the road deck in place. Typically that's not a feature you are looking for in freeway design.

I saw this movie on an advance screening about a week before it officially opened. I was 21 at the time. It was very exciting as well as funny, I give credit to Whedon for some of the best lines. "I own this car, it's not stolen!" "It is now."
I recently read about Alan Ruck, it seems that he didn't get much work between "Ferris Bueller" and this. He was another struggling actor waiting tables when he was finally cast in "Speed", as well as "Star Trek: Generations" which came out later the same year. He was also in Jan de Bont's next movie "Twister" two years later.
This is a great date movie...Keanu essentially saves Sandra Bullock's life over and over again. One thing I noticed is that Keanu only fires his gun to open a locked door, he never shoots at the villain. He and his colleagues are some of the nicest cops in movie history.

I heard that in the original draft of the script the elevator bomber died. It was then Harry, Jack's partner, who would become the movie's villain and put the bomb on the bus. He would've been forced to retire after being shot in the leg by Jack, and his life would fall apart after. Then a year or more after that he would put the bomb on the bus and make Jack get on it.
The script was changed after Jeff Daniels was cast, because it was felt that he was "too likeable" and the audience would not want to see him as the villain.

This is one of those films that just came together by some cosmic roll of the dice, and can never be reproduced through sheer will, as many tried(and failed). The story, the characters, the situation, on paper this should have been failed in epic fashion, but the director nailed it as did everyone involved. This movie is like your favorite roller coaster, as you may know where all the twist, turns and dips are, but that never stops it from thrilling you with each ride. And as many times as I've seen this movie, it never gets old, and Sandra was for me the VIP, as how could you not love here character and performance.

Yeah, lots of people call this "Die Hard on a Bus" (IIRC many considered it settled when even John McTiernan - director of 'Die Hard' - called it that). And they're all wrong :).
("Die Hard" is 1. a lone hero, _maybe_ with a helper, 2. Trapped in one location, 3. _with_ the bad guys, who outnumber him. In 'Speed' Jack Traven _isn't_ trapped with the bad guys, in fact he's the only one on the bus that _can_ [and does] leave, nor is he alone, nor is he outnumbered. And yep, i'm fully aware that this means "Die Hard With a Vengeance" isn't _technically_ a "Die Hard" type movie :)

I read that Jan De Bont got inspired to do an elevator sequence from when he was trapped in one for a 1-2 hours while a cinematographer on the original Die Hard. If you notice the logo “Pacific Courier” on the plane that the bus crashes into, it was the courier truck that the terrorists arrived in at Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard because both movies had the same production designer who also changed to logo to “Atlantic Courier” for Die Hard with a Vengeance since that film is set in NYC.

Mythbusters actually tackled the "Bus Jump" myth. The answer is no that is not possible. Now if A) there had been a significant ramp at the end of the section or B) if the next section was quite a bit lower maybe. but a 20 foot gap with little to no incline off the launch point the bus would of dropped down several feet within seconds.

Now most commentors will say that jump is impossible. BUT. You see, they don't make movies about ordinary buses that dive straight down into a fifty-foot gap. Just like they don't make movies about ordinary test pilots who die when their planes disintegrate at Mach ten like in Top Gun Maverick. This is the whole point. They only make movies about the really amazing things like jumping a bus 50 feet, or somehow walking away from a 7,000 mph plane crash. This is simple cinematic exposition. Illustrating that these are exceptional people, not like you or me. I never got a movie. Did you get a movie?
